Overview
In late August 2000, the DfEE invited all Education Authorities to bid for funds for a series of ‘Classroom of the Future’ projects. The challenge was to conjure up what a ‘Classroom of the Future’ might be like, and to communicate this vision effectively in the bid. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea put forward such a bid in September 2000, and in February 2001 was notified by the DfEE of its success in winning £750,000 to bring the project to fruition. The building, which will be onsite at St Francis of Assisi Primary School, will house one class of children permanently, and will have smaller rooms attached to it so that other learners in the RBKC community can have access to it as well. To date we have chosen Studio E Architects as our building design firm, and have begun the learner consultation process which will inform their final design by early autumn 2001. Construction is set to commence in March 2002, and our intended opening date is January 2003.

Project Plan

We will publish online project plan shortly. It will be a dynamic document that is updated regularly. This feature will enable anyone to follow the project's progress from theory into being. Stay tuned...

Consultation

The summer 2001 term was devoted to learner and community consultation. Workshop 1: On June 14 a large group of teachers, pupils, architects, artists, scientists, and engineers gathered in the Isaac Newton Professional Development Centre to work toward a concrete design for the building. The pupils involved were the winners of the Classroom of the Future competition that was held in May 2001. The quality of their design ideas they submitted in the competition won them the right to brainstorm ideas with the very people who will be designing the building. We will publish feedback from this workshop shortly.
